Being a part of the home décor industry, we are surrounded by beautiful things, decadent and luxurious. We are fortunate enough to be able to indulge our passions and create pieces that reflect who we are and how we live. We know just how lucky we are. We are humbled by it. For years we at the Turquoise Palace have strived to procure products that meet our definition of what we call Responsible Luxury. It’s quite simple: we want to feel good about the beautiful things we sell every day, but we also want to, in a very concrete way, give back to the communities in which we conduct our business. We have teamed up with a local charity in Toronto called the Furniture Bank where we volunteer our time and help with fundraising efforts via charity auctions and product donation. Canada is home and we love being able to give back in a meaningful way. In the same spirit, we wanted to give back to our home away from home, India, the community where all our beautiful products are created by hardworking artisans in big cities and small villages alike.
This year we had a major breakthrough. We met TARA.
The Society for Technology & Action for Rural Advancement (TARA) is a social enterprise set up in the year 1985 in New Delhi. It is an "incubation engine" of the Development Alternatives (DA) Group which has been providing development solutions in India and elsewhere. The vision of DA is to create sustainable livelihoods on a large scale leading to a mobilized, widespread action to eradicate poverty and regenerate the environment.
TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS FOR THE POOR – TARA MAKES IT POSSIBLE
TARA as an “enabler” is instrumental in the creation of livelihood support systems, training and capacity building for the rural poor and marginalized communities. TARA as an “aggregator” bundles support service packages, helps large corporations explore new markets and also aggregates the output of local producer groups including micro, mini and small enterprises and connects these groups to market opportunities for ethical products and services. Governments, large corporations and civil society networks benefit from TARA’s expertise as a “manager” of large awareness creation, environmental action, community development and service delivery programs in areas such as affordable housing, renewable energy, water management, sustainable agriculture, waste management and recycling.
TARA RECYCLED PAPER & PRODUCTS
TARA paper is a recycled handmade paper and paper product, which follows the ideology of "waste to wealth." This practice was set up in 1996 in Orchha under the sustainable livelihood program for the Sahariya tribal women in central India. TARA paper is particularly special. It is not only made of recycled and waste materials but also crafted by the careful hands of highly skilled villagers, most of whom were impoverished women. It creates jobs and incomes while saving the environment.
We met with the amazing folks at TARA and we were in. We could not think of a more worthy cause for Turquoise Palace to champion.BUY PRODUCTS >
